We get out quickly, because a green pool only gets harder to clear.
A lot of companies answer a green pool by emptying it, acid washing the surface, and filling it back up. It looks decisive. It is also hard on the plaster, expensive to refill, and in this area it carries a real risk, because an empty concrete shell sitting in wet ground can shift or crack.
We clear green pools with the water in them. It takes a few days rather than a single dramatic afternoon, but your surface is not stripped, your shell is not put at risk, and you are not paying to refill a swimming pool you already had.
The order matters more than the chemicals do.
Most pools need more than one visit. A pool that has been neglected long enough to stain or that has an equipment failure underneath it takes longer, and we will tell you that up front rather than after.
Most green pools we see have the same story behind them. Something interrupted the routine during the months when the water was least able to tolerate an interruption.
Summer is when the pool is under the most pressure. Heat burns through chlorine quickly, storms dump rainwater and organic debris in, and that rain dilutes what protection was left. A pool that would drift slowly out of balance in winter can go from clear to green in a week.
The interruption itself is usually ordinary. A trip out of town, a pump that quit, a service that lapsed, a filter that needed attention nobody noticed. None of it is dramatic. It just happens to land in the worst possible season for it.
Recovery time depends on the pool, and we will give you a realistic window after seeing it rather than before.
Two things drive it. The first is how far it went. Water you cannot see the bottom through has more algae in it, and the filter has to physically remove all of it once the treatment kills it. The second is equipment. If the pump or filter is the reason the pool went green, the pool equipment repair happens first, because treating a pool that cannot circulate is money spent for nothing.
Once the water is clear, weekly pool maintenance is what keeps it that way, and most customers move onto a regular schedule from there.
